MIND GERMS

I came across this term, mind or mental germs, the other day. It’s such an appropriate concept to consider and explore as we move through this coronavirus pandemic. Most of us associate the word “germ” with its most common definition: a tiny life form that spreads DISEASE. But it can also refer to any small life structure that grows into something larger. A common example is a tiny seed that grows into a magnificent plant. “Germinate” is a familiar verb derivative.

Since a germ is anything that spreads and grows larger, good or bad, when we apply this term to our thoughts, a familiar truth becomes evident. If a thought is a germ – and a persistent, habitual thought a very potent germ – imagine what an influence for good you can be when you focus on positive thoughts, words, and actions.

This concept is nothing new for students of Truth teachings, such as Unity and Centers for Spiritual Living. Buddhists and others whose beliefs focus on avoiding disruptive and disturbing thoughts and actions practice positivity as well. And the reward for all individuals who adopt this thinking tends to be peaceful, loving, and joyful life. If it works on an individual basis, it can work collectively, even globally, as well.

As we practice social (physical) isolation these days in our attempts to curb this epidemic, we need not become detached or lonely. We can reach out and connect with loved ones and dear friends via our phones by calling, texting, emailing or going on-line to stay attached to others. Humans are social creatures. So this time of relative or complete seclusion can be very uncomfortable. But it doesn’t have to be.

While I value my alone time for the opportunity it always offers to connect more deeply with my inner self, my Spirit, I know some find time alone to be challenging. Maybe it makes them antsy or anxious to go somewhere and do something. But one lesson that presents at this time for us all is the importance of JUST BEING. We do far too little of that in western cultures. So why not try to develop a new practice while the Universe is giving us all this wonderful opportunity of TIME TO JUST BE!

As we direct our mind germs in positive directions, we will feel an immediate shift from anxiety to the proverbial “peace of mind” everyone seeks. With practice comes perfection; and if not perfection, at least greater calm and quiet. And those are by far the strongest antidotes for this troublesome time.

How wonderful it is to realize that without going anywhere, without doing anything, we can actually influence the world for good. As you purify your soul and your home environment in this manner, when we once again “open for business,” everyone who visits will benefit from this wonderful, positive energy you’ve created!
